Inside: 5 celebratory schools out poems for summer breaks, graduations & vacations ahead.
Oh, the fondest memories I have of middle school and high school… And not to mention college! All of the beautiful memories of the days leading up to summer vacation, when teachers are more relaxed, homework didn’t quite matter, and everybody was planning all the coolest pool parties we were going to have over the summer.
The last week of school, while filled with finals and stress and hopes of a good GPA, there’s only one thing you can think about… School is out!
While there’s nothing quite like that thrill, these poems capture the energy and the celebration that we all felt back in those days of the end of the spring semester.
Whatever your plans are this summer, vacationing, relaxing, catching up on life, anything fun or exciting, these poems are sure to catch the fun energy building up to those final seconds in the classroom.
At my tiny private school in Texas, we celebrated the last day of school the only way Texans know how… With a hoedown, of course! The last day of school, we all got to break free from our uniforms, break out our jeans, boots, flannels, and any cowboy hats we had in our possession, and dance the day away with our friends having a hoedown and eating the most delicious barbecue you’ve ever had. If that doesn’t feel like summer, I don’t know what does!
Celebrating The End Of A School Year
Celebrating the end of a school year is not hard to do, everything in you is rejoicing that the year is over, homework has all been turned in, and no more books to read that you don’t want to. Now it’s all fun and games, late nights, movie nights with your best friends, pool days… Anything you want to do this summer, is yours to have.
So how do you want to celebrate the end of the year? The answer is easy, but also not easy at the same time… Unfortunately. You can never go wrong with your classic pool party, but you have to make it a fun theme, of course! Theme your pool party to match the year that your class is celebrating finishing. We always focus on what’s next, but why not celebrate what you just finished now? This can be a fun way to reminisce on the year while also being excited to see what’s coming ahead, so if you just finished your last year of high school, rather than celebrating college, throw a party that reminds you of high school! While that seems ridiculous to do so, it’s a really fun way to mix up the themes.
You can always go with a really drastic Y2K, or Red Hot Summer, and these are just some of my favorite pool party themes.
How To Use These Poems
As I mention almost every time, there’s no need to try to “use” a poem, sometimes you just have to read it and enjoy it.
But there are some fun ways that you can utilize poetry into your life that makes it even more special and more fun. One of these ways I like to think about, is including it in with the end of year gifts that you give to your teachers, if that’s something you do. Slipping in a poem about the end of the year might seem a little offensive saying that you’re happy to be done with their class, but trust me, teachers are just as ready to be done as you are! Celebrate and have fun by gifting these poems.
If you’re giving a toast or speech at the end of the year party, this is another great way to use it! Fun, random, and different than what you’re all used to hearing. Let the good times roll.
Schools Out Poems
1.School’s Out
Girls scream,
— Boys shout;
Dogs bark,
— School’s out.
Cats run,
— Horses shy;
Into trees
— Birds fly.
Babes wake
— Open-eyed
If they can,
— Tramps hide.
Old man,
— Hobble home;
Merry mites,
2. School’s Out
The school books are gone,
And the teachers are too.
The schoolhouse is closed,
So what’s there to do?
Well, you could go to the lake,
And jump right on in,
And swim like a fish,
With a slippery fin.
But no matter the course,
That you set out to take,
Ensure you enjoy it,
Even if it’s not at a lake.
3. Summer Fun
The children on the block
Are playing with chalk.
Bubbles are flying around,
Popping when they hit the ground.
Giggles and wiggles in the pool,
The kids are taking a break from school,
Staying cool.
Everyone is having fun
In the sun.
4. School’s Out
Watching the ticking of the clock,
Tick-tock tick-tock
The clock that counts our days away.
Tick-tock tick-tock
Two minutes left and shrinking fast.
Tick-tock tick-tock
It’s summer time and school is out!
Thank you Sir for teaching us
Another year is gone.
Thank you Miss for showing us
The meaning of those songs.
Summer’s here, summer’s here,
School is out, school is out.
Although we’re glad it’s holidays
Thank you for the year!
Heavy feet trudging through
The sweet smelling grass.
A sneeze, a speck of hay fever,
Blame it on the class.
A fire bell with lots of groans,
Hurry up, we want to go home,
Ticks on registrations chart
Jimmy, here ma’am, no it’s Mark!
Yes Sir no Sir, three bags full Sir.
Left right, left right.
Emily, Amy, quiet now!
Tick-tock tick-tock
I’m too hot in here now Miss!
Tick-tock tick-tock
Sssshhh, there’s only seconds left.
Thank you Sir for teaching us
Another year is gone.
Thank you Miss for showing us
The meaning of those songs.
Summer’s here, summer’s here,
School is out, school is out.
Although we’re glad it’s holidays
Thank you for the year!
It’s now the summer,
School is out,
The last day gone with and enormous shout.
Some of us you’ll see again,
Some of us you won’t.
But the thing that we want you to know is
Thank you for the year!
5. School’s Out
Well we got no choice
All the girls and boys
Makin all that noise
‘Cause they found new toys
Well we can’t salute ya
Can’t find a flag
If that don’t suit ya
That’s a drag
School’s out for summer
School’s out forever
School’s been blown to pieces
No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher’s dirty looks
Well we got no class
And we got no principles
And we got no innocence
We can’t even think of a word that rhymes
School’s out for summer
School’s out forever
School’s been blown to pieces
No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher’s dirty looks
Out for summer
Out till fall
We might not go back at all
School’s out forever
School’s out for summer
School’s out with fever
School’s out completely.
While the excitement builds at the end of the semester, it also is a double edge sword as the days start rolling a little slower, and classes start dragging on a little longer. And studying for finals? Ew! Don’t even mention it.
Hopefully these poems get you excited and help push you towards the end of the school year and help you be excited for what’s coming, even though the days currently are so long. There will be a day, whether you believe me or not, when you look back on these days with fond memories, and remember how simple it was simply just waiting to be free for the summer.
Don’t take these days for granted, absorb all of the art and poetry during this time that really allows you to realize how fun this time of life is, though it doesn’t feel like it sometimes!
